the team is a brand new team that is trying to figure out how to work together and its been a little rocky so far. tonight preston (the leader) brought in his friend david mckinney - the guy who leads the campus band at liberty - to teach us some stuff in rehearsal. this guy is like the paul baloche of liberty...if anyone here knows who that is. basically hes a big deal. he also knows what hes doing like none other.
he worked with us for about 90 minutes on 2 songs and when he left i felt i'd learned more valuable information in that short time than i had in any of my hands on experience classwork. i am such an experiential learner and so many times i feel like all i get is instruction. and while instruction is good, i struggle applying it if i haven't experienced the learning of it...if that makes sense. this rehearsal was like an experiential tutorial and it was SO GOOD!!! like, it's stuff that will stick with me and i'll be able to teach others!
what i liked most about this rehearsal with david was watching him run it. i've had some experience running band rehearsals but i'm still not completely confident. i always feel like i can't communicate effectively. watching this guy in action was so inspiring. he wasn't just running the rehearsal - he was teaching us how to play in sync with each other as a team as effectively as possible. he knew EXACTLY what to say and HOW to say it. he spoke with purpose and focus and knew exactly how to communicate to each musician there. and because he was so good at communication, the results he got were really great.
can i be that?
please?
please?
