i would like to preface this by saying that just because i am one of the worship leaders does not make me your personal juke box. i am not doing "market research" here. this is just the sort of stuff i talk about with people over peppermint hot chocolate and it's summer so i haven't had my fix in a while.
1. what is ONE song that we used to sing/have never sung in church that you wish we would?
2. what is ONE song we currently sing in church that you really "connect with"?
bonus points if you tell me WHY???
bonus points if you tell me WHY???
3. what is ONE time that you can remember having a genuine worshipful moment in church in which you truly felt the presence of the Holy Spirit? what was going on in the service and what made it so worshipful for you?
Madre - only ONE. choose carefully.
Phil - i know you read this so answer please :)
MARIE - i can't wait to read your responses!!!

1 - "soon" by brooke frasier. it might take a few times for the congregation to learn, esp the bridge, but it's sooooo good.
2 - "desert song". i intially was not a fan of this song, but it has come to mean a lot to me this past year and a half. He is my song in every season.
3 - i have lots of those times... but i think it really "helps" me worship when they are few distractions. your transitions between songs really keep the distractions down. and not doing announcements smack dab in the middle helps too. it also helps me to intentionally choose where i am going to sit. certain people are hard for me to sit near. and so i choose a seat where i can focus.
4 - my additional info, tho not request. songs i want to sing in church more often:
how deep the father' love
still
wonderful cross
awesome God
before the throne of God above
my savior my God
revelation song
create again
you may not be my personal jukebox, but i did pay for all your piano lessons and your college ;o)
love you.
good thoughts. thanks!
tho i must admit...you may need to find another worship leader to lead "soon"...
1. you know i am bad at thinking of songs, & even remembering what we sang, but God of Wonders is always loved.
2.we've been singing a lot of good songs lately. maybe jon foreman's song?
3. there is one time that was very worshipful for me, but i don't remember what was going on in my life or in the church service.
so there are my very nonhelpful answers. sorry.
wow...called out specifically. and i wasn't on reader at all last week so here we go.
1. So hard..."My Audience" by Shane and Shane. A much needed reminder for me every time I come to worship that God is my audience, the reason we worship.
2. "You Hold Me Now" by Hillsong. I've had enough tough things happen to me and to friends this year that the song is a great reminder that God is in control and holds us in our time of need. And there's a much greater time coming.
3. Singing "I Still Am" by Phil Wing at camp (I know it's not church, but the most memorable worship experience for me recently). I get so focused on my own world like I am the main character in the story and not God. A great reminder from God that in my storms, he is.
4. Gonna cheat like your mom...would love to work in Ascend the Hill's reworkings of hymns. Not always the easiest to sing in church, but can't get enough Shane & Shane or Phil Wickham.
I am deeply hurt that you did not call me out by name!! ;-)
I was one of the ones on vacation...going to ponder this and answer again when it's not 1:30 in the morning.
Wow! Called out by name! This is one of very few comments I've ever done. Remember, Emma, I told you I'm a stalker :)
But since you asked...
I like all worship music in all fashions, but I don't like too much of one thing. For instance, I love hymns, but I would be bored if we always sang hymns. Same with contemporary praise songs. I like blues, country, gospel/ southern gospel,African-American spirituals, and even big choirs (i.e. like the Continentals). I like it all and would enjoy an element of that type of music every now and then. We used to get the gospel music when it was Steve Gutierrez and his guitar every once in a while. I liked that -- it was different and it kept you on your toes and for me, I focused on the words more.
In terms of a song I would love to sing but we don't -- I have always liked Rebecca St. James' "Song of Love " -- one of the few songs that speaks of the Trinity.
Things we sing now that I like: most everything -- but I especially enjoy Blessed be your name and any songs based on Scripture verses. I love that! I also really like the God be in my head song.
For me, I am most able to worship when my heart is right and I am focused on the Lord. I really try to listen to the words and many times I am overwhelmed by God's love for me and overwhelmed by who He is and His character. I struggle with worship when I am distracted or didn't take time to prepare my heart and sometimes I lose the focus when we repeat a phrase over and over. I feel like a robot and the words lose their impact for me.
Thank you for asking!
i am loving these answers!!! thanks so much stalker readers ;)
I have actually been thinking about this post, sweet Emma, since I first read it...I WILL respond. Soon.
I have to say, in order to be completely transparent here...we have been visiting some new churches over the past several weeks...so, I have really had some amazing experiences...that have "stretched" me...and really deepened my times of worship in a corporate setting.
1. "Lord Almighty" by Kristan Stanfill. I am not sure if we have ever sung this at CBC, but I am CRAZY about it. I get goosebumps.
2. Hmmm...not sure. I really love "From the Inside Out" by Hillsong..I know we have sung it, but I am not sure how recently. Does that count?? :). I think when I am singing this I really am truly "crying out" to God to change me, fix me, show me the areas of my life that need to be molded...reminds me of how far I've come...and how far I have to go...
3. TONIGHT! We have started going to a local church (local to us) on Sunday nights...it is a wonderful format (we sing a few songs, the pastor teaches for 45 minutes+, usually from 3-5 verses out of the Bible, and then, in response to what we've learned/heard/read, we sing several more songs. I was totally engrossed today. I think my heart was open and ready and expectant and God really met me right there. I felt that I was singing directly at his feet...as if no one else was there. I had goosebumps throughout all of the songs...and for once really didn't care how my voice sounded...it was just between God and I. Absolutely fantastic...
Sorry I am tardy. I am not even sure that you will actually read it...it's been so long!!!
LOVE!
haha marie i just read this! thanks for the response!
