transcription

A friend of mine wrote an instrumental guitar piece that was played at his wedding. When he wrote it, he intended it to be played on piano, but was not that pleased with that pianist's interpretation, as she had to learn it by ear and was not an ear-trained musician.

a few weeks ago he and i sat down and figured it out and made the magic happen. next week i'll be recording it for a project he has in the works. i'm also working on transcribing accurate sheet music for the piece so that if he ever needs anyone to play it in the future, he'll have something to give them.

this is great brain exercise for me! the input information is audio and the output is visual. i'd describe it as a cross between math facts and a puzzle. when i was in school, everyone i knew could do this to some extent. but now, as i work with all sorts of musicians of varying levels of ability, i'm becoming more and more aware of how rare a skill this is. thanks God!
