good eats!

madre wanted me to blog about the different restaurants here in odessa. she said it was cultural and interesting. any other specific blogging topic requests just comment!

there are many restaurants in odessa that are the same you'd find anywhere in the country. but mexican cuisine is HUGE part of the culture here. taco bell doesn't really cut it here. in fact, i have yet to meet a person here who actually likes taco bell. there are two other mexican fast food places that are much more popular.

the first is Rosa's

Rosa's is THE most popular place to get fast food. many kids have asked me if they have Rosa's up north and when i say no they gasp dramatically and ask how i've survived all my life. it's what they crave when they come back from trips out of the area. it's why they don't want to move out of texas. i'd say it's definitely a step up from taco bell...but i wouldn't move to texas for it :)

next is Taco Villa

Taco Villa is the texas version of taco bell. they even have the same colors as taco bell! along with the typical tacos, burritos, etc, they have a taco burger (which looks just like a taco...) and serve fries with various sauces. they also have a salsa bar which is a big favorite with texans. taco villa doesn't do a whole lot for me honestly - if i'm going for mexican fast food i'd prefer rosa's - even over taco bell ;)

there are some other fast food places in this part of the country you won't find many other places. one favorite you may have heard is of is Whataburger

Whataburger is popular with many kids because it's open 24 hours. they are known for being open 24 hours. also for their burgers. they have several different kinds of burgers. my first impression of this establishment was to staaayyyy awayyyy because just by looking at it i could tell it was just greasy and not really all that good. we stopped at one on the way to camp a few weeks ago and i was SO right. everyone kept telling me i just had a bad experience because the one we stopped at really wasn't that good. i don't care. i'm DONE with whataburger.

the last notable fast food restaurant in texas is Texas Burger. (couldn't find a photo for this one...)

texas burger is a favorite of Roy and Norma. it's pretty much your classic burger joint. the burgers are bigger (cuz everything's bigger in texas...) and come with a sweet pepper on top of the bun. they also have a choice of regular fries or spicy fries. they also have "homemade" ice cream (that's why Roy and Norma like it). aside from the portions being so huge, i'd say that texas burger is my favorite of the bunch.
